How the Alphabet Came to Be Used in a Sign Language

چکیده

T  is so often linked to writing that we need to remember that its achievement has two parts—the written symbols found on a page and also the symbols that represent a cluster of sound units, or phonemes. Once committed to a page, language becomes visible and permanent and can be regarded on a plane apart from the intimate interaction of speakers. David Olson, among others, argues that the act of writing on a page has transformed thought about language because it suspends and turns language into a representation in space, one whose content we can study, review, and reconsider (). The second feature of the alphabet—that it enables us to break down the fluidity of speech into units that we can transfer to a visible medium—is a monumental achievement. This aspect is particularly useful to certain groups of language users—religious and deaf signers, who appear to have little in common, except that both need a tool for converting speech to silent and visible forms. Additionally, the two communities have discovered that the alphabet can alternatively be represented on the body instead of on a page. In Greek and Roman antiquity there are recorded references to the use of the body and hands to represent the alphabet, presumably as a representational alternative to the use of paper.

Semiotic Analysis of Written Signs in the Road Sign Systems of Tehran City

Introduction: as a component of the urban landscape, road sign systems are among the most critical elements of urban environments. Generally speaking, the written signs dominate the design of these systems. These signs can also foster aesthetic and visual pleasure compellingly and innovatively. Furthermore, they perpetuate a specific image in the minds of their observers. This research seeks to...

Persian sign language detection based on normalized depth image information

There are many reports of using the Kinect to detect hand and finger gestures after release of device by Microsoft. The depth information is mostly used to separate the hand image in the two-dimension of RGB domain. This paper proposes a method in which the depth information plays a more dominant role. Using a threshold in depth space first the hand template is extracted. Then in 3D domain the ...

A Reflection on Kristeva's Approach to the Structure of Language

Reaching out to history and subject in terms of meaning variation, Kristeva could show that language cannot simply be a Saussurean sign system. Rather, she went on to delineate that language, beyond signs, is associated with a dynamic system of signification where the ''speaking subject'' is constantly involved in processing. Julia Kristeva, a French critic, psychoanalyst, theoretician, a post-...

Using Deep Convolutional Networks for Gesture Recognition in American Sign Language

In the realm of multimodal communication, sign language is, and continues to be, one of the most understudied areas. In line with recent advances in the field of deep learning, there are far reaching implications and applications that neural networks can have for sign language interpretation. In this paper, we present a method for using deep convolutional networks to classify images of both the...

Japanese Manual Alphabet Recognition from Still Images Using a Neural Network Model

Japanese manual alphabet is used mainly by hearing impaired persons as complements of sign language. Using neural network model, a Japanese manual alphabet recognition system is implemented. Still images of finger shapes from 2 directions are used as inputs of a multi-layer perceptron and the classification of the alphabet is the output. Overall performance of recognition is around 88% in avera...
